Came upon this site by chance - Am a great and long fan of Mikes, saw him race the Six hour on a Ducati at Amaroo Park and again at Bathurst on a TZ Yamaha in the rain. No one will ever come near being as brillant and magical to watch as Mike The Bike. Guido!.

MIKE THE BIKE was my hero after 1 Goeffery Duke, i followed his career closely and even was on island for his comeback albeit on a Ducati.
Vale runs a close third and who knows, but i think
if Mike was still about he would still win.

R.I.P. Mike

I am related to Mike Hailwood! He was my grandmas brother!!!!!! I think he is amazing and my brother really looks up to him! It is so sad how he died in that crash, not even when he was racing!!!!

I had the priveledge of watching the great man race four times. The Mallory Park Race of Champions (1966 I think), where having lost the 500 championship weeks earlier to Agostini he put aside his TT winning 500, a very suspect bike that cost Mike the championship, and riding the 297cc Junior Championship bike (really just a bored out 250cc Honda 6) he thrashed Agostini, who was riding his Championship winning 500cc MV3. Mike lapped the field, and failed to lap Agostini by literally metres. One more lap and he'd have had him. I saw Mike win the 67 Senior TT from the balcony of the pub at Creg ny bar, where he often sat up and waved to us as he took the corner flat chat, and saw him race Formula 5000 at Oulton Park. Also at Oulton Park I saw Mike prove his brilliance to all the local critics, that reckoned he only won because he had the best bikes. About 1966 or 7 some genius came up with the idea of getting all the British riders together to race 500 singles. Mike was up to ride Tom Arter's G50 Matchless - the fastest single in the country as all doubters quickly pointed out. However, Mike blew the engine up in practice and with Bill Ivy on Arter's other bike, there was no spare engine. Mike headed out into the pits and found one of the club support racers, a bloke from The Wirral 100, my club, with a very second hand spare G50 motor. Not even first choice for a club race. Mike borrowed it, fitted it and raced it. First lap Mike was well down the field on the old oil burner leaving a trail of smoke and miss fires. We could see him over on the back straight being passed by everything like he was standing still. But with nothing but shear skill and heaps of daring he worked his way past international greats like Ivy and Read, and short circuit national champs like Minter and Cooper, etc, etc. I watched from Lodge Corner, where Ivy at one point, trying to stay with Mike, left the track and went between two trees before re joining. The great man won and silenced every critic in the land. There will never be better. My bloody hero he was.

I have really enjoyed this website as it is a great tribute to a brilliant rider. I have had something in my possession for 35 years which I have always cherished. I lived in Auckland, New Zealand until 1984. In 1976 I bought the first Suzuki GS750 sold in New Zealand (immediately after GS750s took out the Manfield Six Hour Race with a 1-2-3 finish). The dealer I bought the bike off gave me an autographed blown up photo of Mike Hailwood on my GS750 - it was from a promotional story Mike did for Suzuki in an Auckland newspaper.
