Great site,saw Mike race many times,in Isle of Man, and the Ulster Grand Prix in the sixties. Still have his autograph, from 1962.He stayed sometimes with Brian Coll, one of Irelands top singers, when he raced at the Ulster. I worked in the Intertainment business, and met Brian often. Being motor cycling fanatics, we talked about Mike often. In fact in 1979, at The North West 200,Mike did a lap of honour on Brians Honda 6.I have read with interest all the comments from the fans, I think the two races that say everything about Mike Hailwood were, 1964 senior,where he could hardly walk at the finish, and the 1965 senior, when he kicked the bike into shape. I was lucky to be there both times.He was the Ultimate Bike Racer, and we will never see his like again. How sad that he had to lose his life, along with his daughter, on our public roads. I now live in Canada, this site brings back great memories. Keep up the great work.

I couldn't be there that year but Big Rico was at the Highlander,phoned me at my work,stuck the phone out the pub window when Mike came by!!!!I like to think Mike would appreciate the gesture. I never saw mike ride but have all the sound tapes.When I raced my Honda 500/4 in the late 70,s and thru the 80,s it was great to have it done up in the honda racing livery and with four open megas before the bloody decibel limits ruined everything, the sound was gorgeous and I imagined myself as mike and I won a lot to, just like the great man. Fantastic web site, brings back all my racing memories at Brands & Mallory Park. Watching "The Master" Mike thrilling the crowd whether on a Manx Norton, MV Augusta or Honda.Those were the days. on the grid with mike were the likes of John Cooper, Paddy Driver, Bill Ivy... & in 350's Jim Readmen, 250's Phil Read..... need I add more. All were great (not forgetting AGO) but for me Mike was the word in bike racing.. Great, glad I found this web site. As a footnote. I'm trying to find an old mate from England. The first road race I ever saw was the IOM TT in 1966. After that I was hooked. There is little doubt that Mike Hailwood was the greatest Motorcycle Racer EVER. His comeback in 1978 was pure magic. It is a tragedy that his life was cut short along with his daughter in a road accident.

excellent site....great pictures. Brought back more than a few memories. Not too many Americans have ever heard of the Isle Of Man let alone had the opportunity to go there. I have, and did. I was there in 1967 ( and again in 97 ). Of all the things I saw and people I met one stands head and shoulders above all. That was MIKE THE BIKE flat out on the 250 six. He was and always will be as far as I'm concerned the greatest motorcycle racer of all time including the future.

The best sporting memory of my life was to see SMBH's winning return to the IOM. I had followed his career throughout the 60's, watched his Formula 1 races at home and abroad, and thought he would never race again after his F1 accident. Then he appeared at the 1975 TT, riding pillion past the grandstand, and the reception he got was amazing. Then to return in later years to win again was phenomenal. I watched the race from "The Bungalow", and people were crying tears of joy as he came past on his last lap. Anyone who contests the fact that he was the greatest motorcyclist who ever lived, just could never have seen him in action.

Most of what I have come to know about Mike Hailwood has come from reading about him. Through the Champions series of video from Duke I was finally able to see him in action on and off the track. By far, the best article I ever read is the one written by Barry Coleman entitled "Mike the Bike". An article that ran in the November, 1978, issue of Cycle World (USA). I started with my first bike in 1970 and although I sometimes followed the racing in the UK I truly wish that I made the effort to go and see Mike race but I never did and that is my one true regret.If I was granted one true wish it would be that the lorry driver who caused Mike and his little girls death on that fateful day was 100 miles somewhere else,preferebly in the middle of the sea.Well reading all the emails we can honestly say what great memories Mike has left us and a common bond amongst motorcyclists all over the world.I will definately be looking in on his site.

God must have needed someone special the day he took Mike from us. A real hero who will never be forgotten, Mike was the perfect gentleman and supreme sportsman. My special memories? Morning practice in the Isle of Man, listening to that Honda-6 miles away - and then - gone! Or at Oulton Park (1968?), realising that Mike and Bill Ivy had just walked through the paddock wearing kaftans and wigs. Or the 1979 Formula 1 race, watching Mike get ever closer to the oil slick at Guthrie's on which I was positioned with oil flag; ever lap he got nearer before peeling in .. A real superstar but more normal than the rest of us put together. To Pauline and David, I salute you. Keep up the excellent work!

love the site, are you going to get any audio of the duc's mike rode? i have a mike hailwood replica ducati in my garage and it really would be the only bike that could get away with a paint scheme like that!!! having said that i am a little disappointed with ducati for its treatment of the mh900e naming rights etc, so good luck with both the site and the litigation. i wish i had been around when he was racing-2 stoke gp racing really doesn't have the sound for my liking......roll on 2002 for the return of 4 stroke racing....mick

I was lucky enough to see him race in Oz in the mid 70's and a was just old enough to appreciate who I was watching. After the race I was bowled over when I went to ask for an autograph and met a great sportsman. It's nice when your heroes are genuine nice guys and can live above the hero status they are given. I still have the autograph given to me by a true champion, both on and off the bike.

Fantastic site!! Im the lucky owner of a Ducati Mille Mike Hailwood Replica,bought new in 1985,rebuilt totaly in 1988,made it look much more like the real Sports Racer. It's now a Ducati 1000 NCR/MHR Replica.(there's a signature replica from Mike, that I copied from the Sports contract,on the fueltank!) The walls in my garage are filled with paintings,posters and photographes from Mike's win in 1978. Last year we have visited Mike's grave in Thanworth,very emotional! Although I started riding bikes around the end of Mikes career, so I never actually saw him race (one of my biggest regrets), he has always been my all-time sporting hero. Always so genuinely modest in success, never any excuses in defeat, he could put his leg over ANY bike and get the best out of it. Earlier this year on my way to marshal at the MRO round at Donington Park, I did a bit of detective work and located his final resting place, I spent half an hour in contemplation in the churchyard, and felt very humbled to be in the presence of the great man. I first saw mike at silverstone in it think 1964, the man was ridding the fire engine(mv augusta) it was obvious even to me then that he was special. He pulled up near to me and casualy signed autographs while sitting on the bike waiting for the mecanics to remove it to the the pit area, I followed his bike career through to the final retirment. The comeback at the 1978 TT on the ducati was without dought the greatest sporting comeback of all time. There have been several pretenders to the throne but the man will i think hold it for all time. A great site to his memory.

I first went to the I.O.M. in 1978 simply because Mike the Bike was going back. As a school boy in the sixties and an avid motorcycle fan Mike was the only one to watch, a very beautiful style of riding. I was in parliament square when Mike caught Phil Read. If you were not there you could not imagine the atmosphere everybody was behind Mike, Phil Read must have been devastated. The KING was back. Excellent site, I shall visit again.

NOBODY, but nobody, could make the 250 "6" sing like Mike. When Honda brought one over to Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2001, and it was fired up, I am not ashamed to say that I shed tears. I followed Mike's career in the 60's, and saw him race on numerous occasions, but my best - and most embarrassing memory is when I met him at Cadwell Park during his last year of racing in the 60's. After being bold enough to get into the Honda pit, I actually managed to knock a 250 6 off it's stand - where was the hole in the ground !! This was after Mike had given me his time for a chat and a photo, so I didn't hang around for the aftermath !! He was one of a kind - gone but not forgotten . Thanks for the memories. I went to my first race with my father in 1959 at Abadare park and I remember everybody talking about Mike Hailwoods talent. some years later when I had my own transport a BSA Bantam I rode to MAllory park from Penarth to watch Mike on the 250 six and then in the 500 race he used the 297 6 and won against AGO but was disqualified because his bike was to small it should have been at least 350!.He was amazing no doubt the greatest of all time for me I Had the pleasure of meeting his son David today 26/08/2001 at Silverstone, He's just like his dad it was like winding the clock back to 1968, a real enthusiast never a Prima donna

I saw Mike race quite a few times,but i think the one i remember best was at Cadwell Park.My friend and i had been working night shift on friday,and we went straight from work to Cadwell.When we got there it was the practise session and Mick was in the paddock sat on the 250-6 revving it up.It made the hairs on the back of my neck stick up.Mike was the best.A guy with no airs or graces.A true sportsman,and the best motorcycle racer ever.

It is great to be able to read and see new information about the MASTER. I first saw Mike race at the Chrystal Palace track in the late 50's with Dave Chadwick, and was in the IOM for his triumphant return. In between I saw him race many times, inc the ride at Mallory, after he had retired, when he showed all the respected scratchers the way home on a British single. I was lucky enough to meet him twice. Once as a fan at the Brands Hatch Race of the South meeting where he rode the wonderfull six. Later in 1978 when he performed the official opening of the Italian Motorcycle Stand at that year Earls Court Motorcycle show. In 1978 at the TT I was a guest of BMW hospitality in the paddock after the race when both Mike with Ted Macauley sat down after the race at the next table. I have never seen any photos of this and will delve into my collection and forward a selection of photos in due course. The one and only time I saw Mike racing was at the TT in 1966 ( I think it was 1966 - when the Seamens Strike was on and the TT was put back from June until just before the Manx Grand Prix.) I went for Big Friday only. I watched from Governors Bridge. What a fantastic noise the Honda made. Sent shivers down my spine! And I can still shut my eyes and picture Mike now. Slipping the clutch to get round Governors, it was deafening. On reading the earlier comments on this site, it quite brings a tear to the eye that someone was so well thought of and admired. I had the privilege of meeting Mike very briefly back in the early seventies, at Watkins Glen during a USGP wweekend. At the time He was driving (I believe), The Surtees TS9B in Brooke-Bond Oxo livery. He was gracious to this young F-1 fan...I followed the remainder of his F-1 career, and was deeply saddened by his death. If the turnout for Sundays 'Testers Run' is anything to go by I doubt that Mike will ever be forgotten. That so many people made the effort on what started out as a miserable cold day is some tribute to his memory. I was never lucky enough to see him race, let alone meet the man. He was, I guess, part of the reason I got into Ducatis in the late seventies. It was a little depressing seeing how run down the area around the old H&G; premises is. I'll take away plenty of good memories though:- the warmth and humour of the anecdotes of those who raced against him; the prescence of his 250 Ducati in the nave; Phil Read putting his 750 MV back in a van - up a ramp side saddle, casual as you like; the sound of the 850MV on open pipes as it pulled away from the church ; chatting to total strangers as if they were long time friends. Even my bevel behaved itself! (mostly.) A good day. Congratulations to the organisers.

In 1976 I was part of two sidecar teams that traveld to New Zealand and raced in the 76/77 Marlboro Series. I had the pleasure of getting to know Mike during the series. He attended most of the meetings and was one of the nicest and polite racers I have ever met. Towards the end of the series, on the south island, I was present when he borrowed a set of leathers and helmet and took Warren Willings TZ 750 for a ride around the race track. That was the first time he had been on a race bike in some time and his reaction was " pretty quick isn't it" ( the TZ 750 at the time was of course a major hand full !!) not long after that Mike of course started racing again. I will always remember seeing him at Daytona a couple of years later and he remembered me and we visited for a while. Truly a remarkable racer as well as a true gentleman. The web site is long overdue and a wonderfully done.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Mike's passing. I was fortunate to see Mike in N.Z. on a couple of occasions - driving a Surtees and even riding a TZ750, followed by his riding a TZ750 at Bathurst in 1978 before he went to the I.O.M. To me he is the greatest rider for his abilities over a long timespan and, after his car racing days had finished, being able to come back and still be victorious at an age when most would have retired. I was too young to have seen him at his peak but have read about his exploits and am amazed. He will never be forgotten.

What a great site, and long overdue. I never saw Mike race and have only vague memories of his 1978 TT victory (I'm 36), but as I grew and discovered my love of bikes I also learned more about the man who generated such loyalty and affection from racing enthusiasts the world over. I bought books about Mike and read article after article in the classic bike press. I can't say what I find so fascinating about a man I never met, but his exploits speak for themselves and, it seems to me, his humility touched the fans then and now. I sent off for my 'Mike the bike' T-shirt and, I'm sorry if it sounds nerdy, I'm wearing it as I type this. I'll be at the memorial run in Birmingham this month and I'll be proud to pay a tribute to a man who ranks as one of Britain's finest sportsmen; a great sportsman in every sense of the word. I learned of Mike from my uncle,'Mike Phillips' who used to race a Norton Dominator. My uncle hails from Liverpool and remembers Mike pulling up outside the house in a Jaguar E-Type to pick him up.I have watched his races and learned a lot about riding, from watching-especially the Staying in-line with the bike and not trying this 'knee-down' crap, the benefits of which are only usually whinged on about by those who are incapable of just getting on a bike and riding it fast and efficiently. I felt a big emotion when I assembled Mikeís Honda 6 cylinder.It seemed me to go back to sixties when racers were talented man able to win fantastic races using little technologies. I saw a Mikeís race in 1970, in Pesaro (Italy) when he was in Benelliís Team. I was only 6 years old and I couldnít understand that he was such a great champion, the champion whom my father admired. I rode a Triumph Bonniville to Daytona to watch the race, I think it was 1964, or '65. I had a great time, and I was mesmerized by some guy who was riding circles around every- one-else. I asked who he was and what he was riding, and was told "he is Mike Hailwood from England, and he is riding an MV Agusta. He was the greatest rider I have or ever will see. I guess I kind of lost track of Mike, but I went to England in 1965, I was in the U.S Air Force, and I was sent to RAF Mildenhall. I could have seen Mike, if I had tried, and could have bought a new Triumph Bonniville, but I was so busy trying to have a career and raise a family, I didn't do either. But if anyone can ride half as well as Mike, I'll have to see it to believe it.

Just found the site and have read every article and looked at every picture contained here in. FANTASTIC!! What can you say that has not already been said. I grew up in Birmingham, the home of British Motorcycles and sadly the place where Mike was to loose his life in a stupid road accident. I followed his career before I could legally ride a motorbike and then as I trotted around the globe. Mike was a man who still today I refer to the greatest comeback ever known to motorcycle racing and for him to not just win, but to do so on a variety of machines at a place so demanding as the Isle of Man, shows just a small amount of the mans true talent. Then to be such a gracious gentleman as well, was the topping on the cake. There is and can only ever be one, Mike the Bike. Great web site, thanks. Mike was, without doubt, one of the most genuine 20th Century heroes. After reading the Guestbook comments, I realise that I was one of the lucky ones who saw him ride on many occasions through the sixties. The very first time was at Mallory Park, 18th June 1961. I still have the programme which he happily signed in the paddock, later. This is one of my most treasured possessions, along with the memories of his effortless style and 'down-to-earth' nature.

I saw Mike, Dave Chadwick and Frank Cope in their first races at the Roy Hesketh Circuit in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Later, I met Mike and many other riders at Mike's SA home in Hailwood Park, near Durban,(Built in conjunction with Frank Perris),when I was reporting on the "Natal TT" for the Natal Daily News. Mike kindly gave me a model kit of a Norton 500 to build. I saw Mike every year in which he came to SA and the sight of him on the NSU and Norton, will be forever in my mind. I was fortunate to have Pauline sign my copy of Mick Woollett's new book on Mike, which I bought at Beaulieu. Thank you, Pauline, for taking the time to chat to me about Mike's career in SA. I met Mike on his first visit to South Africa,(sorry don't remember the year) when he was 18yrs old, he came out here with a 250cc NSU Rennmax and at every track he rode he either broke the race or the lap record, I also have his book written with Ted Macauley,I was fortunate enough to get him to autograph this for me on one of his visits to the now non existant, Hesketh race circuit at Pietermaritzburg, this is now a treasured memento. The site is a great place to visit. One of the first bikes to ever grab my attention was a particularly tasty red/green/ model with a white stripe and lettering. Much like a Castrol oil tin (although the Italians will tell you the MHR900 was coloured off their national flag-fair assumption I suppose). Well now, I am happy to say I am the owner of one of the Mike Hailwood Replica's and I love the fact that so many people know who it is the bike is named after. Through sites such as this I keep learning more about the man who I have to say was the most influential bike racer of the century.....I only wish I'd known him or had the chance to see him race in the flesh. I was a very young man at Daytona early 1970's when a BSA 3 blew up while he was competing in the race. I was very disappointed. I 1actually got to touch his sword (the BSA 3). What a competitor. I have followed Mike`s career from the very beginning and was lucky enough to meet him a few times in the Isle of Man and other meetings up and down the country in the 1950`s. Mike was the best rider ever.He could get on any machine and invariably win.My fathers fondest memories are of him on board his 297cc six,especially at the isle of man in 1967 when he was only lapping 1 mph faster on the 500 4 than on the six.I am sure if he was still around and still had it he would have been at assen for the centennial classic 2 years ago as he was sadly missed.I would like to thank Luke Lawlor for his fantastic collection of bikes etc.

As a high school kid, when my friends had "heroes" like Mickey Mantle mine was Mike the Bike. I never met him and never even had the chance to see him race, but there was never any question he was the great one. It's disturbing to me so few people outside the sport seem to know about him. I tell anyone who will listen about the "comeback in '78". That is truly a sports legend equalled by few and surpassed by none. It's certainly a story that deserves to be put on film. I guess he was great, "for the love of the sport."

I virtually lived at Brands from late '50's to late '80's when I became resident overseas. No other rider sticks in my memory more than Mike, I had the good fortune to chat to him several times during practice sessions in the paddock and found him to be so modest and unassuming. Mike Hailwood, super star of super stars, in my opinion there is only one other person in his league and that is Ivan Mauger, one on the road and the other on dirt. Both the ultimate professionals. I was lucky enough to meet Mike at Birmingham Speedway in the late seventies when he had a bike shop with Rod Gould. It was like meeting GOD. Dear Pauline and David Thankyou for developing a Website worthy of Mike the Bike. Only you, his direct family could do it the right way. I found the Site advertised in the latest Australian Motorcycle magazines and well, here I am. I hold very fond memories of meeting Mike at the Castrol Six Hour at Amaroo Park in Sydney, he had just finished some Saturday practice on the Duke and I approached him to sign his book and the Petrol Tank of a Protar model of the Honda 250cc Six, was there a problem, no way. What a gentle man in a sometimes violent sport. I have both items placed between SMBH peuter tankcards in my Display Case. I appreciate the opportunity to help with photo archival info as time permits. A tremendous idea to involve the fans. What a great idea, a terrific site for the enthusiast, especially older ones like me. Saw Mike at IOM in '67 on the early 500 Honda 4, what a beast. Favourite memory is Snetterton late 60's, Mike on the Honda 250 four, rode it in 250/350 & 500 or open. In each race he took a regular national grade rider out with him for 3 or 4 laps then cleared off and broke the outright lap record, improving it in each race. With no competetion to push him, that was the class of a true champion.

If I recall correctly, Mike just rode away from everyone that day, till his Dad signalled him to cool it...which he did...just a bit. There will never be another Mike. Dear Pauline, it was my pleasure to bring Mike, Paddy Driver, and Mike's father to the US for the first International race at Willow Springs in 1962. He sure showed the Americans the way around the track. It was this first experience racing against Mike that sparked the US riders to try International racing. I remember talking to him at a party in Kingston, I told him that I rode scrambles (MX now) & he informed me that I must be nuts to do that. I think my response was, "me nuts? I was at Brands last weekend & I saw you going around Clearways in a 2 wheel drift & it was pouring down rain, who's nuts?" Great web site for a great man, on & off the track. Dear Pauline, I and the motorcycle world thank you for what you have given us here. I had a few other riders I followed through the 50`s, but when Mike came on the scene, there was no room for the others. I have done many paintings of this great man in the past for American Honda and other private indiviguals and still keep one that looks over me. I grew up poring over magazines for articles about Mike. He truly was the greatest racer. I finally got to hear the 250 six at Steamboat and see Nobby fettle it a few years ago. I only wish I could have seen the complete picture.

At first I was a doubter along with thousands of others, but after seeing him fall off twice, in the same race at Oulton Park, and still win, I was converted. He was possibly the only competitor who was greater than his sport.

I was only 13 years old when my Brothers took me to the island to see Mike on his comeback in 1978. I cheered and celebrated with the rest of the Island when he won. Later that year I met him at the bike show in Birmingham. I was only a kid but he chatted to me like an old friend. Since then I have tried to read all I could about the great man. Mike truly was the greatest of all time. There will never be another. Great site - the memories will live forever.

I was lucky enough to see his return to the TT and watch him systematically set about destroying Phil Read in a Titanic battle. Little did I know then that I would one day go on to race on the Mountain circuit for 16 years at the Manx. Mike you were truly a remarkable man.

as a young man ,my friends and i watched and admired mike. in the 1970s we met mike at the isle of man during the tt races. it was in the palace ballroom, where the prizes were being presented for the days racing. i introduced myself and mike was very nice to me and my friends. at the time he was world champion and recognised as the worlds greatest race rider, yet he still had time to offer us all a drink and chat to us for a while. he was summoned to appear on stage so he left our company and proceeded to receive his trophy. all my friends still admire him today as the greatest rider we have seen and as the great man he was.

I saw this site advertised in MCN this week and could not get on it quick enough. I was blessed with the oppertunity of watching the MASTER at work a few times, one memory that has always remained to this day was watching mike at Brands in a Hutch 100 meet, the level of consontration on his face(we could stand much closer to the track side then) was unbelievable, and yet you knew that he was relaxed and just waiting his time to just clear off,(ask Phil Read)We were robbed of a truly great man. The sound tracks along with the photo's have gone straight onto my hard disk, they make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and lots of fond memories return of this unbelievably skilled rider.

Oulton Park in the late sixties was my home track and I spent many hours watching SMBH during practice and races "playing" with the opposition, I still have the Double LP recording of the IOM Diamond Jubilee and the sound of the Hondas is still sweet music. I remember Mike and Bill Ivy dressed as hippies at one meeting and being refused entry to the paddock cos the official didn't recognise them. The site is a brilliant idea and brings back good memories.

First saw Mike at Brands Hatch in the sixties,on a Kirby Matchless,then on the Honda six on it's first outing in the UK,never ever forgotten-the man always looked as though he was just cruising but was actually going much faster than anyone else-and more approachable in the paddock than most.Thanks for great memories and good luck with the website-I'm sure it will go from strength to strength.Keep in touch.

I had the privledge of meeting Mike in Australia ?1980 I think.,when he came to race at Bathurst on TZ750 Yamaha arranged by Milledge Yamahas' Gerry O'Brien. Mike had the choice of being driven around by the celeberities at the time but chose not too, and accepted my offer of transport,in my 1964 Holden EH with myself and my wife. In the very short time of two days I realised that I had met with one of the most humble and down to earth persons it has been my fortune to meet.I consider it the greatest priveledge Ihave had.As it happened we were not able to get the race result befitting the man due to our inability to maximse the bkes potential,from memory Hideo Kanya aworks rider for Yamaha stole the thunder.Thank you for this opportunity to reflect on truly a great person
