Eight races counted toward the 1963 500cc World Championship. Points were awarded in each race to the first 6 riders. [8 for a win, 6 for second, then 4,3,2, and 1 point for 6th place.] The Champion was decided by a net calculation as follows: Halve the number of races and add one if even, subtract one if odd, then count a riders best scores. For 1963, a riders top 5 scores were taken into account. Mike won 7 of the eight 500cc races for a gross total of 56 and a maximum net of 40. Second was A. Shepard with a net of 21 points. Mike was 500cc World Champion in1963, for the third year in a row. His 500cc World Champion run would last for four years, from 1962 to 1965. |
