Mike Hailwood
Mike won the 500cc race after setting a 1 hour record of
144mph on the Daytona speed bowl earlier the same day No.6
is South American Benidicto Calderella on a 500cc Gilera
4.
Notes: The 1964 Grand Prix held at Daytona was the first
GP to be held in the United States. Mike won the race, and
was 2 laps ahead of Read on a Matchless at the end. The race
was initially led by the Argentinian Benedicto Calderella on
the Gilera (bike 6 above)who was able to keep ahead of Mike
on the fast banked circuit through the superior speed of the
Gilera. Mike got ahead by outriding the Argentinian on the
twisty in-field section, before Calderella eventually
dropped out at half distance with gearbox problems. Prior to
the race mike had broken the 1hr record.
